One in Carlinville's stable of elite competitors, Rives posted a time of 50.7 seconds in his specialty event. He also served as a key runner for Carlinville's sprint relay teams, excelling on the 4x100-meter, the 4x200-meter and the 4x40-meter. Rives was the Litchfield Sectional runner-up
