MONDAY'S ROUNDUP: CM roughs up Granite City
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Civic Memorial baseball team extended its winning streak to five games Monday afternoon with a 9-2 nonconference victory over Granite City at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
CM, which had lost three straight before its current victory run, improves to 17-7. Granite City falls to 9-11.
Sam Johns got the complete-game win to improve to 4-2 for the Eagles, who broke open a tight game with four runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth. Johns struck out eight and walked no one.
Zach Tobin went 3-for-4 and Cody Trosley and Chris Campbell each had two RBIs for CM, which outhit the Warriors 12-8.
Kyle Adams (1-4) took the loss for Granite City.
Edwardsville 8, Centralia 4 - The Tigers had just five hits, but stole 12 bases and were issued nine walks in a nonconference victory in Centralia. Chris Foreman, one of five Tigers pitchers, got the win. Ian Sikes had two doubles to lead Edwardsville, which takes an 18-7 record to today's Southwestern Conference game at Alton.
Southwestern 14, Staunton 13 - The Bulldogs scored six runs in the fourth inning and six in the fifth to take a 12-11 lead, but the Piasa Birds answered with three in the sixth to win in Brighton.
Southwestern is 19-11. Staunton is 4-11.
Cole Lawson had three hits and three RBIs, Ryan Cox had three RBIs, and E.J. Krause and Adam Wallace each drove in two runs for Southwestern. Cox and Krause homered, while Matt Milligan worked 2 2/3 innings of relief to get the win.
Roxana 17, Pana 5 - The Shells rapped out 19 hits in their six-inning victory in Pana. Roxana is 12-14.
Ian Wheat had a double, home run and four RBIs, and Michael Rust had three hits and four RBIs for the Shells. Drew Fennewald worked four innings to get the win.
Calhoun 8, Brown County 4 - David Baalman and Trent Bick each had two hits and Aaron Peters belted a two-run homer to lead the Warriors to a WIVC victory in Hardin. Stephen Knight earned the win for Calhoun, which improves to 8-18. Brown County dips to 10-11.
Hillsboro 9, EA-WR 7 - The Oilers led 7-2 after two innings, but watched the Hiltoppers rally for the nonconference win in Wood River. The Oilers are 7-15.
Lucas Cobb had three hits for the Oilers, who got two hits and two RBIs from Bobby Spurlock and Jason Rodgers.
SOFTBALL
Gillespie 3, Greenville 2 - Alina Fields' two-out triple scored Brittany Corbin with the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Miners to a victory at home.
Kelcie Matesa hurled 10 hitless innings after a second-inning single to finish with a one-hitter. She walked two and struck out 23. Randi Martin had two of the Miners' three hits.
Gillespie is 20-3 and plays at home at 4:30 p.m. today against Southwestern, which leads the Miners by one game in the South Central West standings.
Southwestern 10, Staunton 2 - The Piasa Birds scored a pair of runs in five different innings to put away the Bulldogs in Staunton. Amanda Haney fired a two-hitter to earn the win. Katie Trombetta had three hits and three RBIs, and Megan Smith drove in three runs for the Birds, who improve to 18-3.
Marquette 3, Vandalia 1 - Bernadette Heneghan had a complete-game two hitter to lift the Explorers to victory in Alton. She struck out six and walked none. Heneghan and Michelle Pedigo drove in runs for Marquette, which moves to 11-14.
Pana 8, Roxana 3 - The Panthers broke open a 3-3 game with five runs in the sixth inning and went on to win in Roxana. Brianna Markel, Randi Eveans and Mackenzy Hodge each had two hits for the 5-15 Shells. Hodge took the loss.
EA-WR 4, Hillsboro 0 - Kelsey Harrison hurled a two-hit shutout to lead the Oilers to the win in Hillsboro. Harrison fanned four and walked none.
Lindsey Niemeyer hit a two-run homer, and Kaycee Webb and Harrison each had two hits for EA-WR, which improves to 8-12.
GIRLS SOCCER
CM 2, Wesclin 0 - Kaci Harkey scored twice to account for all the scoring in the Eagles' victory in Bethalto. Amy Brazier made nine saves to earn the shutout. CM is 6-10.
Carlinville 2, Staunton 0 - Ali Broom scored a goal in the opening minutes and assisted on Nikki Boente's second-half goal as the Cavaliers won a SCC match in Carlinville. Liz Kelly earned the shutout in goal for the 12-8 Cavs.
BOYS TENNIS
EA-WR 8, CM 1 - The Oilers lost the first set in five of six singles matches, but came back to win four of those on their way to victory in Bethalto. EA-WR improves to 16-1. Jared Schneider's three-set win at No. 6 singles enabled CM to avoid a sweep.
Roxana 9, Hillsboro 0 - The Shells romped past the Hiltoppers without dropping a single set in SCC action in Roxana. The Shells are 9-7.
