FRIDAY'S ROUNDUP: Tigers hit five HRs, beat Joliet

The Edwardsville Tigers used a power surge to beat Joliet 12-8 in the Tigers Classic round-robin Friday night at the District 7 Sports Complex.

The Tigers hit five home runs, including two by sophomore first baseman Michael Failoni, to improve to 16-6. In the first game of the tourney, Chatham Glenwood edged Highland 3-2 in a matchup of Class 3A powers.

Chase Carroll, Daniel Caulk and Dane Opel added home runs for the Tigers, who rapped out 13 hits. Edwardsville led 8-2 before Joliet rallied to tie the game with six runs in the fourth inning.

But Opel's homer in the fifth inning put the Tigers up 9-8 and Edwardsville put the game away with a three-run sixth. Opel went 3-for-3, while Carroll and Failoni each drove in three runs.

Marquette 8, EA-WR 4 - The Explorers broke open a tie game with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the South Central West matchup in Wood River. The Explorers are 13-6 and 6-3 in the SCC West. EA-WR dips to 7-14 and 4-6 in the conference.

Matt Angleton had a double, trip and two RBIs, Thomas Hentrich had two RBIs and Derek Daum had two hits for Marquette. Drew Moore worked six innings to earn the win.

Kyle Scott had two hits and two RBIs, and Lucas Cobb had two hits for the Oilers.

SOFTBALL

Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 13, Jersey 3 - SHG outhit Jersey just 7-6, but used 14 walks to put away the Panthers in six innings in Springfield. The Blazers remain unbeaten at 19-0. Jersey is 1-20.

Shelby Smith homered for Jersey, which got two hits apiece from Chloe Fox and Brianna Meszaros.

GIRLS SOCCER

Jersey 8, Litchfield 4 - Litchfield scored four unanswered goals in the first half to take a 4-2 lead, but Jersey tied the game at halftime and added four second-half goals to win in Jerseyville.

The Panthers got four goals and one assist from Sammi Ferguson, and two goals from Allison Guerra to improve to 9-10.

PREP TRACK

SCC Meet -- Gillespie scored 121.3 points for the girls title and host Carlinville tallied 209 points for the boys championship in action late Thursday night.

The Cavaliers won 11 events on the boys side. Mark Woods was best in the shot (49 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and the discus (145-2). Teammate Mike Ruyle was tops in the 800-meters (2 minutes, 3.8 seconds) and the long jump (19-8).

Lucas Loots of Staunton won both the 1,600-meters (4:50.7 seconds) and the 3,200-meters (10:25.0) in boys competition.

In girls, Sarah Bussmann of Gillespie doubled her fun by winning the 400-meters (1:03.5) and the triple jump (31-4 1/4). Teammate Erica Wolff reigned in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.0) and the 300-meter low hurdles (48.2).

Alex Senaldi of Staunton scored victories in the 800-meters (2:41.5) and the 1,600-meters (6:14.5).Carlinville's Kelsey Card prevailed in the shot (a record 44-4) and the discus (126-4)
