THURSDAY ROUNDUP: Hawks win county meet

Alton, Edwardsville baseball teams post victories

Carrollton's boys and North Greene's girls emerged with championships Thursday at Hamann Track in the 110th annual Greene County Meet.

The Hawks scored 97 points for their eighth consecutive title, while the Spartans accumulated 71 points for their crown. North Greene (57) and Greenfield (33) completed the boys' scoring and Carrollton (63) and Greenfield (43) rounded out the girls totals.

Carrollton's Tyler Lippert won the shot (50 feet, 6 inches) and the discus (158-6 1/2). Teammate Caleb Snyder was best in the triple jump (37-2) and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (43.3) and Pat McAdams of the Hawks won the 800-meters (2:12.3) and the 1,600-meters (4:51.8).

 Mascoutah wins relays - Mascoutah scored 93 1/2 points to finish first in the Roxana Relays. Highland was runner-up with 89 points and Triad took third with 72 points.

PREP SOFTBALL

 Gillespie 26, Girard 0 - The Miners routed host Girard in nonconference action. Brittany Corbin went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs and Randi Martin went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and six RBIs as the Miners scored 14 runs in the fifth inning. Kelcie Matesa struck out 13 in five innings as Gillespie improved to 19-3.

 Alton 12, East St. Louis 2 - The host Redbirds rocked the Flyers to improve to 15-7, 6-4 in the Southwestern Conference. Brittany Twichell went 2-for-5 and Alexis Wagner went 4-for-4 and pitched six innings to earn the victory.

 Roxana 5, Carlinville 1 - Roxana won its fifth game on the heels of Mackenzie Hodge's five-strikeout performance from the mound. Kati Pearson went 1-for-4 with a home run for Roxana, which improves to 5-14. Savannah Bates went 2-for-3 for the Cavs with a double and a triple.

 Edwardsville 5, Granite City 1 - The Tigers overcame six errors to improve to 19-3 overall, 10-0 in the SWC by defeating host Granite City. Rachel Coonrod went 4-for-4 and Lauren Francis struck out 10 to lead Edwardsville.

 Greenville 1, EA-WR 0 - The host Oilers lost in South Central Conference West action. Leah Carter had two hits for the 6-12 Oilers.

 Civic Memorial 11, Waterloo 0 - Haleigh Jenkins went 3-for-4 and Kayla Kirkpatrick went 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles. Kaylee Yates struck out six in a one-hit performance as the Eagles improved to 15-4, 6-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

PREP BASEBALL

 Alton 18, East St. Louis 0 - The Redbirds took advantage of 10 walks and five errors by East St. Louis in routing the host Flyers. Alton improves to 14-6 overall, 4-6 in the SWC. A.J. Pfeifer pitched three innings to earn the victory. The Flyers are 0-12, 0-10.

 Edwardsville 5, Granite City 2 - Jesse Walker logged the victory and Dane Opel got the save inthe Tigers' SWC win at home.

 Roxana 11, Carlinville 1 - The Shells (11-4, 5-5) pounded out 14 hits in a five-inning rout of host Carlinville in SCC West action. Travis Jackson led the hit parade with a 3-for-3 day including a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Jeremy Diveley, Drew Fennewald, Brandon Turner and Ian Wheat all had two hits.

Carlinville's Alex Gagnor went 2-for-2 with two doubles, but suffered the loss from the mound, surrendering 13 hits and 10 earned runs. The Cavs are 2-9, 2-6.

 Jacksonville Routt 13, Calhoun 1 - The Warriors fall to 7-18, 3-9 in the Western Illinois Valley Conference with a road loss at 14-4 Routt.

 CM 12, Waterloo 0 - The Eagles tallied 16 hits in routing host Waterloo in five innings in MVC action. Zach Tobin went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Sam Johns allowed one hit with eight strikeouts to earn the victory. CM is 14-7, 5-2, while Waterloo is 12-8.

 Carrollton 13, Virginia 3 - An eight-run first inning made the difference as the host Hawks routed Virginia.

PREP TENNIS

 Marquette 5, Roxana 4 - The Explorers improve to 4-10 overall, 4-2 in the SCC with a victory over the Shells at Moore Park. Marquette won two of three doubles matches to pull away.

 Whitfield, Mo. 4, Alton 3 - The Redbirds fall to 9-8 with a loss in Creve Couer, Mo. Whitfield won two of three doubles matches to secure the win.

GIRLS SOCCER

 CM 7, Jersey 1 -Kaci Harkey scored three goals, while Trisha Ruby and Brittany Dailey added two more as the Eagles routed the Panthers in MVC action in Jerseyville. Allison Guerra scored Jersey's lone goal. The Eagles are 5-10, 3-6 while the Panthers are 8-10, 1-7.

 Marquette 4, Carlinville 0 - Nickie Wisnasky and Megan McCune both scored two goals as host Marquette improved to 10-5, 6-0 in the SCC.
